In June we covered the original 1993 Hocus Pocus novel which was released alongside the film. This novel was written by Todd Strasser and features some of the deleted scenes that never made it to screen and also parts of the original storyline too.
We reached out to Todd to learn a little more about this book and he was kind enough to answer a handful of questions for us which you can check out below.

When did you write the novelisation? Had you seen the completed movie/script prior?
I was given the script beforehand. Publishers liked to have their novelizations come out before the movies opened in those days. It's possible that I also received some stills from the shoot for description purposes.
How did the opportunity to write the Hocus Pocus novel come about?
Back in those days I wrote many novelisation's so publishers knew that I was someone who they could hire.
There are some scenes that are different than the completed film and the original script. For example, Winifred growing wings and being referred to as an “angel of stone.” Did you create these scenes/ideas on your own?
Probably not, as producers didn't like novelizers doing that. It's more likely that Winifred growing wings was in the script I worked from but was later edited out of the film.
Would you ever like to see your novel re-released by Disney?
Sure.
Are you aware that the novel is now a huge collector’s item and now highly sought after by fans?
I knew there was some interest, but not that much.
What is your Halloween Candy?
Candy Corn!
How do you feel about the upcoming Hocus Pocus sequel?
Didn't know about it until now.
Although the original novel is long out of print, for those of you who would like to get your hands on a copy, they do appear from time to time on Amazon and Ebay.
